I've read that Alchemical Kubrick before -- I'd like to find an archive to see just what he was interested in. I don't think Weidner takes it far enough, past the occurrences of the symbolism. If it can be proved that Kubrick was drawing on these symbols (which is what I'd like to find out), then there's a very interesting argument to be made for 2001 being a lot more than a film -- which is what people have suspected for years, but no one's really laid out what that "a lot more" is. And it goes past the Gnostics through Plato back to the Egyptian gods.
